The sword first appears in the second book, The Chamber of Secrets. It was forged from pure silver by goblins, the finest metalworkers of the wizarding world, originally for Ragnuk the First. It later passed to Godric Gryffindor – although goblin history claims he stole it. That can never be proved either way, since goblin accounts tend to cast wizards as the villains.

Godric Gryffindor founded one of the four Hogwarts houses, which bears his name and is known for courage and bravery. His name is engraved just beneath the hilt, and the hilt itself is set with rubies – the same stones that record Gryffindor’s house points in the giant hourglass outside the Great Hall.
